Historical background
The spinning mill in Murg was founded in the year 1836 by Othmar Blumer from Glarus and production started a year later. Nearly 30 years later the main building burnt down. The new construction dating from 1864 forms the current basic structure. The subsequent successful business operations required various expansions and extensions.
In 1900 Cosmus Schindler, a relative through marriage of the Blumers, took over the spinning mill and founded a joint stock company. He understood how to continually build up the company, even in hard times, until his death in 1950. A lack of raw materials in 1946 was soon followed by a shortage of workers. This bottleneck was bridged by employing foreign female workers from Italy. The so-called "girls' home" was provided as accommodation for these workers.
In 1950, albeit somewhat reservedly, the 50th anniversary of the joint stock company was celebrated.
In the mid 1950s, after a few transitional years, Cosmos Schindler's grandsons, Hans Peter and Heinrich von Ziegler took over the executive management.
The success of the spinning mill was largely dependent on textile exports. Time and time again good years alternated with times of crisis. In the good years, sizeable new investments were always made.
Consequently, at the beginning of the 1970s, a modern extension building was constructed where the latest ring spinning machines were installed.
A new warehouse in the centre of the village followed in 1989 as did a renovation of the generating plant and additional investment in new machinery.
At the same time the textile industry started to come under extreme price pressure as the East started to open up. More and more mill customers transferred their manufacturing operations firstly to Eastern Europe and then later to the Far East. It soon became clear that this process was not simply an economic cycle but rather that structural change was taking place. Profitable production in the long-term could no longer be guaranteed. In 1996, after 160 years, Murg Spinning Mill was obliged to throw in the towel. The most important employer in the village was gone.
However the thread is not completely lost

In the year 2000 Dieter (a great-grandson of Cosmos Schindler) and Esther von Ziegler take over the shares of the spinning mill from various relatives. They believe in Murg as an ideal location and want to convert the properties for new usage. A close cooperation with the local council and the monument conservation authorities begins. In 2002 the former industrial site is converted into residential and commercial zones.
In 2002 the sagibeiz on the lake is opened in the "former sawmill".
A private boat embarkation point follows in 2004 and a year later the garden restaurant sagisteg with lounge and lakeside terrace.
In 2005 the planning permission for the loft project is granted - starting shot for the conversion of the main building. At the same time, together with the municipality in Murg, a wood chips heating system is planned for the entire area.
In 2006 the ground-breaking ceremony and the laying of the foundation stone take place with councillor Heidi Hanselmann in attendance.
At the beginning of 2007 the first lofts, studios and business premises of stage 1 are sold and moved into in May. Just a few months later, the green light is given for the building of stage 2.
In 2008 stage 2 is completed together with the lofthotel.
In 2009 the planning is extended to the so-called "New building" from the 1970s.
In 2010 planning permission for stage 3 is granted and building work starts at the end of August 2010.
Things are moving on at a rapid pace.
